Manuel acosta
Manuel Gregorio Acosta was born on May 9, 1921 in Aldama, Chihuahua, Mexico. His parents were named Ramón P. and Concepción Sánchez Acosta. They moved to El Paso in the year of 1924. In El Paso, Manuel's six brothers and sisters were born.
Manuel Acosta graduated from Bowie High School in 1941. After high school, he decided to join the United States Air Force during World War II. Even while in the Air Force he continued his hobby painting and sketching and he decided he wanted to become an artist. His inspiration of becoming an artist came from when he was on tour in Europe and he saw the works of Francisco de Goya and other artists like him.
Acosta became an American citizen after his discharge from the U.S. Air Force. He then attended the College of Mines and Metallurgy (UTEP) in the year 1946. At college he studied sculpture and drawing under a sculptor named Urbici Soler. After his studies there he went and studied at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. Later he studied at the University of California, Santa Barbara for six months. Eventually Acosta came back to El Paso where he continued studying at Texas Western from 1951-1952.
